“I didn’t think seriously about law being a path for me until my junior year of college, when the pandemic hit. I found myself doing a lot of research into social issues, and wanting a career where I could help people directly. I switched my major to sociology, and from there, took a class on environmental law. I remember reading all these different cases where lawyers empowered communities fight for their health and the environment and thinking, ‘I could do this, too.’” –Sofia DeSimone ’26 discusses her move from social media management to law school, her favorite things to do in NYC, and offers her podcast recommendations. Today is the 25th anniversary of the annual Fred T. Korematsu lecture at NYU Law, sponsored by APALSA. The lecture was founded to honor the work of Fred Korematsu, an activist who was arrested for defying orders from the federal government to enter a Japanese internment camp during WWII. While in 1944, the Supreme Court upheld his conviction in Korematsu v. United States, it was later overturned in 1983 by a federal court in San Francisco.
This year’s lecture will be given by former Associate Attorney General and Distinguished Scholar in Residence Vanita Gupta ’01 and Adjunct Professor of Law Jenny Yang ’96.

On this MLK Day, we reflect on Dr. King's powerful words delivered at NYU in 1961. His message of equality, justice, and unity continues to resonate through our halls and hearts, reminding us that education must be a force for positive change. #MLKDay #NYUHistory

“When you come in to law school, you don’t necessarily have to practice law. It teaches you a skill set that is more transferable than other kinds of skills, with a focus on critical thinking and hard work…If you want to do something that’s not traditional, go for it. Don’t be afraid that you’re going to miss out because of what you think you’re supposed to do. Give it a shot.” –Darian Amirsaleh talks investment management, advice for NYU law students, and his favorite classes in 'Five Years Out.' Read at the link in bio.
