#MakingThings 🧶 A full-scale suit of armor. A pair of bento box-shaped headphone covers. A fully operable—and wearable!—replica of a Ferris wheel. If artist @tataykatelyn (Katelyn Leonardo) can dream it up, she can crochet it, too.

Katelyn’s love for textiles and fashion began in childhood, but it was during the pandemic that she focused on fiber art, experimenting with different crochet projects. “As time passed, crocheting continued to evolve online,” she says, “And with that I could see that there were so many things yet to be discovered and made.” Her unique creations, like her incredible piece of wearable crochet armor, quickly captured everyone’s attention. “To be appreciated and supported for my work was wonderful,” she says, “But to also know I put everything on that piece meant so much more. “

To create her work—like this wearable Ferris wheel— Katelyn pulls from an ever-growing list of ideas she collects as she moves through her day. Once she selects an idea, she gathers visual inspiration in a mood board, roughly sketches it out on ProCreate, and then uses acrylic yarn and crochet hooks to start building her piece. “Though time consuming,” she says, “It’s very rewarding to see an idea slowly materialize from your head to your hands.” 🎡

Sliding into Lunar New Year like… 🐍

We’re celebrating the Year of the Snake with self-taught sculptor @tinayuart (Tina Yu) and her creative interpretation of the “little dragon year.” Born in Beijing and now based in upstate New York, Tina is a full-time artist bringing her imaginative, mythical sculptures to life—with aluminum wire, mesh, clay, acrylics and inspiration from her cultural experiences and the natural world.

Her advice to fellow creatives for the new year? “If you’re not feeling motivated or inspired, don’t force it. And remember, don’t compare yourself to others. Instead, reflect on how far you’ve come since the start of your creative journey, and celebrate your personal growth.” 🌕

🔑 “Everyone has a daily routine,” says @nikbentelstudio (Nik Bentel). “Many of my designs are ways to make one’s daily routine exciting, in a small way.” With a six-person design studio in Brooklyn, NY, Nik creates everyday objects like clothes, bags and wallets—all infused with a playful little twist. From nostalgic wallets shaped like floppy disks to delightfully oversized key ring purses, Nik’s designs inspire you to look a little closer at the world around you. “Rethinking objects already in existence not only allows us to cut down on waste,” he says, “But also shares a novel approach to how one could exist in their daily routine.” 💾

💝 Meet @twin.stitched, the brainchild of twin designers Emma and Amy Whistlecroft, who craft whimsical heart-shaped bags adorned with pearls, ribbons and roses. They’re inspired by the cozy nostalgia of cottagecore and “grandmacore” aesthetics, as well as the frilly femininity of Japanese coquette style—which all comes together in their romantic and nostalgic designs. “We chose to make heart bags to make any outfit extra cute and unique. Most tote bags are square, so we wanted ours to stand out with frills, patchwork and adorable fabrics,” say Emma and Amy. “They can be customized to fit everyone’s style, whether that’s plain and minimalistic or whimsical and kitsch.” Each bag is lovingly handmade: Emma and Amy carefully cut and quilt patchwork squares into heart-shaped bases, adding frills, straps and finishing touches before sending them off to their new homes. 🪡

🌀 “I’m particularly drawn to creating wearable art—pieces that are activated on the body,” says multidisciplinary artist and designer @gracelillianlee (Grace Lillian Lee). “I believe the body itself is a powerful vessel for storytelling.”

Drawing from her roots as a proud descendant of the Miriam Mer people from the Eastern Torres Strait Islands, Grace merges traditional craft with contemporary design. Her work incorporates traditional handicraft techniques like grasshopper weaving, beading and conceptualizing. “The weaving technique I practice is a source of deep pride for me,” she says. “It plays a vital role in preserving and strengthening my culture.” Through her wearable creations—like the work shown here from her first major solo exhibition, The Dream Weaver: Guardians of Grace—Grace seeks to inspire conversation and connection. “I view my work as a celebration of cultural narratives, merging storytelling with art, design and fashion,” she says. “It’s about honoring the wisdom of the past while envisioning the possibilities of the future.”

Grace is currently preparing for the acceptance of an Honorary Doctorate of Design from the University of Technology Sydney. She is also working on The Guardians, a couture collection that will debut during her residency at the @citedesartsparis this July. 🪡

#InnerCanvas 🤡 For @shy.jpeg (Soraya Hannah Yousefi), ceramics is more than just a creative outlet—it’s a form of personal storytelling. “I’ve created pieces that express immense happiness, and I’ve also expressed personal struggles. When I create ceramics that pertain to my real life struggles, the process of creating a piece from start to finish is not only satisfying, but deeply healing.” Soraya’s ceramics, featuring colorful clowns and cutesy critters, are a reflection of her own unique style, which she describes as silly, eclectic and kitschy. “The makeup I paint onto my clowns is inspired by my own makeup that I’ve been doing on myself for years. I am a maximalist to my core and don’t like the look of empty space, so I draw doodles on the sides of my eyes and cover my face with dots, which is the signature look I’ve given to my clowns.”

🎲 Inspired by @adventuresinaardia’s Roll for Sandwich series, where every ingredient of the creator’s daily sandwich is left up to the roll of the dice, Soraya ventured to create her own take on random customizations—with her signature clown mugs. Thus, Roll for Clown was born. “This series has been a fun way for me to take the pressure off, and letting the dice decide the outcome of the clown lets me create something new every time, which in turn has helped with my creativity and avoiding burnout.”

At the end of the day, Soraya simply wants to remind people that wellbeing is found in the small things—and what better way to do so than by starting your day off with coffee in a whimsical clown mug? ☕️

#MakingThings 💡 Step into the vintage world of @aceofshadesshop (Ivy Karlsgodt) where ornate lampshades dressed in silks, velvet, chiffon and fringes come to life, stitch by stitch. With a background in costume making for Broadway, film and TV, Ivy began creating her lampshades to add a cozy touch to her own home during the pandemic. “I was laid off for a while, so I started making lampshades as a new creative outlet and to make my apartment feel more homey. I gradually grew a social media following with my process videos and eventually lampshade making became my full time job.”

From concept to completion, every step is a labor of love. Inspired by the styles from the 1900s to the 1930s, Ivy begins by drawing each design around a shape, fabric or trim. Once finalized, Ivy wraps a steel frame with twill tape and hand dyes fabrics that need customization, which is then individually hand stitched onto each lampshade panel. Then, she adds the finishing touches—fringes, braids and other decor—to create a vintage-inspired work of art that lights up a room.

🥖 Care for a hunk of freshly baked bug-uette? 👓 To share his method for making one of his favorite “delightful but macabre” recipes – beetle bread – @practicalpeculiarities (Nikk Alcaraz) put on a pair of @raybanmeta AI glasses and got to work with dough, scissors, kitchen twine and a swipe of egg wash. “Beetles represent good luck,” says Nikk, author of the new cookbook Peculiar Baking: A Practical Guide to Strange Confections. He recommends preparing this striking loaf for a cozy dinner with adventurous guests. Let us know in the comments if you’ll be making your own beetle bread, and rest assured that no actual beetles were harmed in the baking or eating process. 🪲

🫛 From legumé puppetry to hand-carved pickles, @thubuser (Thu Pham Buser) transforms fresh ingredients into stunning works of art. A chef and culinary artist specializing in food and beverage styling, Thu collaborates with publications like @bonappetit to make food look just as incredible as it tastes. “Everything I make has some sort of internal motion or energy. I want it to feel like you caught it in the middle of a dance or movement, even if it is still,” she says. “I love to see curls, twists, and twirls that really accentuate their nature and bring out an emotion or feeling just by looking at it.”

Thu’s passion for cooking and food styling dates back to growing up in her family’s restaurant in Saigon, Vietnam, where she was drawn to the colors, flavors and flurry of activity in the kitchen. After studying at Le Cordon Bleu and moving to New York City, she opened up a copy of Bon Appétit and asked herself: Wow, who makes this food look so beautiful? “I realized that I could cook and style food for a living and get away with it,” she says.

Much of Thu’s work draws her Vietnamese roots—including these sculptures, inspired by the ancient tradition of puppet shows that her father would take her to as a child. “It’s really important to me that I bring a piece of my culture to every shoot and event, whether it’s subtle or overt,” she says. She also gives people a taste of this history in her Vietnamese banquet dinner series, Ăn Cỗ, which she serves up in Brooklyn, NY. 🥬

🎂 A decadent lime sponge cake with pistachio ganache and raspberry confiture to ring in the New Year? Yes, please. 🙋🏽‍♀️ “Baking has been my passion for as long as I can remember,” says cake designer @meruyert_nursila (Merul Nursila). “I decided to turn that love into something real by starting my own little bakery. I taught myself everything by experimenting and trying out new things.” Merul, who’s originally from Kazakhstan, creates geometry-inspired cakes that provoke the senses. Teaching and sharing her techniques with her Instagram community is a key part of her creative process, she says: “I challenge myself to come up with concepts that aren’t just pretty, but make people stop and think — clever, smart designs that stand out,” Merul explains. “A cake can be more than just food. It can be a piece of art.” ✨
